Collocations

Collocations are combinations of words that frequently appear together in a language and sound natural to native speakers. These combinations are often predictable because they follow patterns that are commonly used. For example, in English, we say "make a decision" rather than "do a decision," even though "make" and "do" are both verbs. The phrase "make a decision" is a collocation.

There are different types of collocations, such as:

  1. Verb + Noun: "Make a mistake," "Take a risk"
  2. Adjective + Noun: "Strong tea," "Heavy rain"
  3. Adverb + Adjective: "Deeply concerned," "Highly likely"
  4. Verb + Adverb: "Speak fluently," "Drive carefully"
  5. Noun + Noun: "Crime rate," "Community service
